Scientific profile
Themes and programs of research:
My research is centered on the neuronal basis of movement, with a particular focus on brainstem and spinal cord circuits that control breathing, locomotion, orientation and posture.
Key approaches and technical skills:
- Cell-type specific manipulations using straight and conditional viral vectors injected by stereotaxy in the brain or in the spinal cord.
- Investigation of motor functions in freely-behaving mice using circuit optogenetic and chemogenetic manipulations, calcium imaging, locomotor and respiratory physiology, electromyography and video-tracking.
- Functional investigations of motor activities on reduced ex vivo preparations: ventral nerve electrophysiological recordings, single cell patch-clamp electrophysiology and calcium-imaging.
- Neuroanatomy and circuit tracings: conventional and viral-based anterograde, retrograde and trans-synaptic tracing schemes.
- Microscopy: epifluorescence, confocal and light-sheet microscopes, 3D reconstructions.
